I'd rather not use Word. What other tools do you recommend?

Any XML authoring tool will work. We’re aware of some partners that are using XMetal.

 

Links that I create between topics in Word turn out to have hard-coded locations to the original hyperlink base location.

This is a known issue. You'll need to manually update the locations for now, if you plan to deploy to other than the original location.

 

Using “ ” to create a space character causes help content not to display 

Use one of the following two workarounds:

  • Use character " " instead.   is the XML-compliant version of the   HTML entity reference.
  • Add a local entity definition to the DOCTYPE declaration. For example: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"[<!ENTITY nbsp "&#160;">]>

 

Which localized versions of help have shipped?

Localized versions of help are released as part of cumulative updates, and with the Feature Pack. You can find them by searching for Help update AX 2012 on PartnerSource. The current KB numbers of help updates are listed below.
