Can AX 2012 R2 be applied with CU1

This question has suggested answer(s)

I am performing an in place upgrade to R2 and was wondering if the R2 cumulative update 1 can be applied at the same time as the AX 2012 R2 upgrade by adding it to the Updates folder in the R2 installation files.

  • Yes, you can "slipstream" updates in AX installations. Check this blog post from the Microsoft support team for details, it's pretty easy: blogs.msdn.com/.../how-can-i-slipstream-cumulative-updates-for-ax-2012-as-part-of-a-new-installation.aspx

  • I have slipstreamed prior cumulative updates but I wanted to verify it was OK to do this with the R2 upgrade. Thanks for your prompt response.

  • You need at the minimum CU3 for RTM in order to upgrade from AX2012 RTM. I have successfully upgraded from CU4.

  • Thanks for your comment. I meant applying the R2 cumulative update which was release in February I believe. We  are currently on AX R1 FP CU3.

  • Hi Peter

If you mean applying a R2 CU on RTM, the answer is NO.

AX2012 RTM (6.0/6.1) (with or without FPK) will have their own CU.

AX2012 R2 (6.2) will have their own CU.

They should have different KB numbers as well. :-)

  • Actually, my question was whether I could slipstream the R2 Cumulative Update #1 when I do an in-place upgrade  to R2. I was not asking what release of AX 2012 I need to be on to run the in-place upgrade.

  • Ah! Sorry for misunderstanding. Doh! xD

I haven't tried that myself, but I think I would have tested it myself if I were you. If it fails, you can always restore back the RTM database and run the split again.

Maybe someone else have tried it.

  • Hello Peter,

Were you able to do your in place upgrade on in one go from FP CU3 to R2 CU1?

Do you have any lessons learned to share?

    Thanks

  • I did try to run the install in one go from FP CU3 to R2 CU1 and the upgrade failed. I did not look into it further since we had a 3-rd party modification which currently only had a R2 version model ready and a decision was made to only upgrade to R2 at the moment.
