Audit for an implementation (Dynamics AX)

This question is not answered

The erp implementation is getting slower and slower. It is going for 2 years now. I feel that we are not all doing right or maybe a partner is not good enough. I would like to initiate an audit of this project. So, the question is how to start that and is it usual way to solve issues with implementation?

We are a contracting company with 30 overseas offices and with a total number of staff about 4000.

  • If you want a second opinion, you can search a list of partners on the Microsoft Solution Finder webpage:

  • Audits of an in-process implementations are not commonplace in Dynamics AX because the audit can be more expensive and distracting than simply "completing" the implementation with the team you already have. In your case, with 4,000 staff, an audit may be worthwhile if only to repair or reset implementation processes and realign goals for the remainder of the implementation.

With that being said, audits are usually either to: (a) analyze current processes and make recommendations that assist in "moving forward" or (b) they are forensic and "look backward" to assess responsibility - the results are usually inconclusive and end up doing no more than demonstrating that there is enough fault to go around for all parties.

If you are interested in "moving forward" audits, let me know, we have developed an effective methodology that affirms the compelling business proposition that drove the Dynamics purchase, quickly confirms the scope, the fit, and the approach to implementing the Dynamics AX software, and finally provides recommendations and/or resources to complete the project and (hopefully) recognize the value that drove the purchase in the first place.

Definitely two years is getting beyond the point of patience and tolerance. I work with Dynamics NAV, as a Freelancer, and often get called into projects where the Go-Live went wrong (thus the name of my company Go-Live ) basically though I do need to say that it is generally 50/50 as to whether the fault is due to the Partner or the Customer. It is quite rare that the Partner is 100% responsible for the issues.

In most cases what I find (in NAV, but probably it applies to any ERP system) is that the client was never really prepared for the change over. The users just expected that the system would work the same as the old legacy system. And on the other side the Partner just assumed that the customer knew that everything would be different, and that they would change their business model to work with the new product.

My best advise is that you call for a meeting with your partner. Have them bring the original Sales Person that sold the system, an executive that can make business decisions for them, and their project manager. Form you side, You need the equivalent, i.e. the person that signed your contract, your project manager, and an executive. Now to all this find your self a third party AX specialist Freelancer that can sit in the middle, and help you resolve this.

Go into the meeting with the objective of generating a new Project delivery plan with dates, and don't go into witht he plan to find someone to blame, just aim to resolve this and move forward.

If it was NAV I would offer my services, but unfortunately I don't know AX well enough.

    Good luck.

  • Hello,

I guess by now you must have moved on.

But my suggestion would have been - to contact Microsoft Services in your country.  In UK, it is not uncommon for customers to approach Microsoft Services to audit their Ax implementations.
