opening email activity requires authentication again

This question is not answered

Can anyone help with a problem that we have whether using the browser or Outlook (2003) Client?

In the examples I have had, they are all emails with the message '..might contain script or content that is potentially harmful and has been blocked'.  When opening the 'activity' we are prompted to log in to CRM again using our AD account.  If you log in successfully, then it opens fine; if you cancel a couple of times, all that is displayed is the error:

HTTP Error 401.2 - Unauthorized: Access is denied

If you log in once, it seems to be OK for the whole session, but as soon as you logoff, then next time will be required to reenter your credentials to open the emails.  We have tried taking the proxy server out of the equation but this doesn't change anything.  Thought it may be something to do with the email router but that seems fine.  There are no errors or warnings on the CRM server to help with this.

At a loss ...

  • Are you using CRM 2011 or 4.0? Also, if you are logged into CRM though IE in the background and try to open these mails, do you get the same prompt? It is an authentication issue, but we would need to dive deeper into what version of CRM, type of authentication, etc...

  • We are using CRM 4.0 and the same issue happens whether in IE or Outlook - and on our test system.  I cannot pinpoint when this changed, but it is not an issue that has been present since implementation - we have been running with CRM for several years and it is only a relatively recent problem.

  • There are a few things I would start with:

    1. Ensure the CRM URL is in the Trusted Sites

    2. Delete your Internet Explorer cache including the Favorites

    3. Make sure there are no stored credentials in Windows Credential Manager

    4. Check your Firewall and any antivirus

    5. Go to Start/ Run and type %temp%. Delete all files here.

    6. Under Trusted Sites Custom Settings, make sure Only Logon in Intranet Zone is marked.

Also, what update rollup is installed for CRM 4.0?
