Cost of upgrading to GP version 10.0

I am getting ready to upgrade to GP v 10.0.  our reseller has given me a quote that it will take about 6 days of time for the upgrade, testing, training & setting up new SQL & excel reports that are new to V 10, almost $10k.   Right now we only have 2 users, and have been using V 9 for about a year.  we are a small company, but want to have a good system in place as our company grows.  Is this a reasononable amount to spend?  Also, I have not been thrilled with the service & personnel of our reseller, what are your experiences with switching vendors mid-stream?

Good morning, Pam.  I recognize your puppy, so I've either responded to your posts before or I've at least seen your posts.  Cute.

I work for a GP VAR in Minnesota.  The question of how long it would take to upgrade is really dependent on the following factors:

    • Which modules do you use?
    • What modified reports?
    • Do you have any integrations?
    • Do you have any customizations?

All of these factors can make an upgrade easier or harder.

But based on your description, you are not a very complex business.  Our largest implementions (50 to 75 users in GP) take that long.

You ask valid question also as to whether switching VARs might disrupt your business.  I don't think so usually.  We regularly experience a "Free Agent" new client, who came to us from another VAR.  There's usually a few hours of learning in the beginning, but after that things are pretty stable.

Perhaps the VAR has quoted a large number of hours since they are not familiar with Excel Reports.  We are, and they are not hard to implement.  Absolutely not more than a day.  However, might their quote also include implementing SharePoint Server?

I would suggest getting a second opinion on your upgrade estimate.  Our firm can provide one, but depending on where you are located it may not make as much sense.  However, a plane trip is only as costly as a few hours of consulting, and much of our work and support these days is done remotely anyways.  We do have clients all over the US, including MN, WI, IA, CO, NH, CA, and also Canada.

If you would like to find another GP VAR closer to you, try Microsoft's Partner finder:

I work on the Dynamics GP developement team and have been doing some  research with a sampling of our GP10 customers to gather a few data points regarding upgrade experiences. I ran across your posting, and I would like to sit down with you after you make the leap and learn more.  If you're up to it, please drop me a note and I'll set something up.

We believe the upgrade experience is one of our more important functions, so any real-life data you can help provide will help us make the leap to GP11 better.

Re: Cost of upgrading to GP version 10.0

I understand your reluctance.  We are in the early phases of upgrading to GP 10.0 and have just spent over $2,500 with our VAR to get a prototype in place without any report or window modifications.  I would make sure you have deliverables lined out in your proposal with your VAR.  I am doing my upgarde in phases with Phase I - version 10.0 without any modifications.  Phase II  - incorpoarte the modifications.  Phase III testing by staff and with modifications as necessary and Phase IV - go live.  This way we can have a handle on costs and monitor the work being done.
