    Handling Packaging in Axapta 4.0

    Hi

We are working on Dynamics Ax 4.0 and implementing the same for a manufacturing company.

The company buys & sells the items in voulme ( m3), produces in pieces ( pcs) and maintains inventory in crates.

Post production the items are packed in crates, each crate having certain number of pieces and certain volume.

How can i use base Axapta to cater to this packing functionality. I tried all inventory journal, but none of them suits, as this is a case of transfer from one UOM to another UOM only and doesnt involve dimension

Please suggest how i can proceed

     Regards

    Albert

    Hi Albert,

I reached out to the AX development team who works on the packing functionality and they explained to me that what you are trying to accomplish is not deliverable from the base functionality in AX. They recommended you submit it as a suggestion for a future product enhancement. You can submit product suggestions via the Microsoft Connect Web site: http://connect.microsoft.com/dynamics. Your partner may be able to do some customization or you might be able to find an add-on solution to help you accomplish this in the near term. You can search for Microsoft Dynamics Partner add-ons using Solution Finder http://www.microsoft.com/dynamics/solutionfinder.mspx.

    Have a great weekend!

Is this the same functionality implemented in the Process Industries add-on from Microsoft? They call it Catch Weight. We need a similar piece of functionality. I'd be interested if either of you have any followups to this.

    Hi Albert,

I would like to know that is there any standard in packaging, is it common across item groups or how items with similar packaging are grouped. i need such info to suggest you. I have customized Axapta 3.0 for a similar case, we handled it with a work flow and customization. i am also planning to develop as an add on for which ur buisness case will help me out.

The Process Industries add-on from FullScope can accomplish what you desire.  We have it, but we do not utilize the packaging feature.  It gives you the ability to use two UOM!!

Interesting.  We are trying to get a look at it soon.  Isn't this a Microsoft product (not FullScope)?  Do you have any idea the depth of the dual UOM?  To further expand on what Johnson was discussing, there may be a variable number of pcs per crate depending on the transaction.  This is not a static pcs per crate by item or such.  Can the inventory be viewed in the specific secondary UOM for the transaction anywhere (like Reservations or Marking)?  I would expect something like this to live on the inventory transaction or the inventory dimension.

    Thanks!

Microsoft bought the catch weight customization from FullScope (they did the same with Loki Payroll).  The functionality is designed for the specific purpose that you described:

    Mr. Jones:
may be a variable number of pcs per crate depending on the transaction
.  I am not sure how they implemented it although I have noticed a new field called PdsQtyCatchWgt on the InventTrans table and my InventDim table was not modified (it is not an inventory dimension).

FullScope has several customizations.  The catch weight falls under "Process Distribution."
