    Upgrading from 2.60 to 5.0 SP1

    Hello everybody,

I´m from Spain and I´m upgrading from 2.60 to 5.1, so I must to migrate previously to 4.0 SP3. The problem is that in the "Transfer Data" step in stage 1 the speed is too slow. It is spending DAYS to do the task.

Table 32 is huge, more than 5 millions of registers. Please, could you tell me how can I reduce the time cost of this task?

I have read something about keys, state indicator and so on, but nothing seems to work. Therefore I can´t find a clear explanation about how must I do the changes to improve the speed.

I have done these changes, following the recomendations of users:

1.- Add keys "Item No., Serial No." and "Item No., Lot No." in table 32.

2.- Change "DBMS Cache" in "Tools -> Options" to value 500000

3.- I have read codeunit 104045, that is containing in "Upgrade260400SP3.1.fob", but nothings seems to be wrong.

4.- I have changed the refresh times in methods "Update" and "UpdateWindow" in table 104037 (State Indicator).

Remember that I´m still in Stage 1, moving the data to temporary tables.

I´m desperate and the time goes by.....

    Thanks in advance.

    Miguel

Do you use bins? If not, there is a function that is creates the warehouse entries, and you can skip that part. It improves times by a lot.

    Hello Rashed,

Thanks for your respose. Yes, it uses bins, the field "Bin Code" is filled in all the entries and with different values.

     Regards.

    Hi Miguel,

Maybe you can use datecompression (I don't know if this is already available in 2.60) before you start converting.

To be honest, I won't do it myself ;-) At the moment there are a lot Microsoft Partners who are specialist in migrations. They can do this fast en cheap, so time can be spared on your end.

Although, before migrating there are some questions you should ask yourself or your customer. What kind of new non-technical functionality can I benefit from in NAV 5.0? Is a engine upgrade maybe sufficient enough? Concerning the fact you are on a 2.60 DB it might be a good idea to do a new implementation based on 5.10 or wait a little and go to NAV2009?

    Cheers,

    Pascal

    Hi Pascal,

Thanks a lot for your response. I am finishing the migration right now, but thanks anyway.

The problem is that customers always want all their data and all their customizations in the new target version of Navision and it is a lot of work.

Anyway, you have recommended to me wait to NAV 2009, why? Will be more easy migrate from 2.60 to 2009?

    Kind Regards.

    Miguel.

    Hi Miguel,

That's true, almost every customer wants that, but in fact this is really short term thinking.

Why 2009? No, I don't think it will be easier. You'll probably have to go past all the mayor updates during the migration. It's just that 2009 is shortly coming and has some nice advantages next to 5.10. Furthermore, if you are allready migrating, why not the "latest" version... Doing it in steps would probably be more expensive for the customer. The main question here is: what profit will the customer gain by going directly to 2009? And for some customers this is worth the wait...

    Cheers,

    Pascal
