Gift card mag strip starts ? ends % crashed POS 2009, help!?

This question has suggested answer(s)

Using gift cards in POS 2009 the mag strip card number begins with a ? and ends with a %, this causes POS to crash when creating a gift card voucher. Has anyone seen this and do you have a solution? Using Magtek USB / MSR with OPOS.

  • RMS is a much more feature rich system than POS 2009. One of those features is the voucher system. I use the voucher system for gift cards in RMS and I can use bar codes, manual entry, or Mag stripe for entering the number into the system at the time of redemption. A mag stripe is nothing more than a fancy way to enter the gift cards ID number into the system. If it's not working for you, then your mag stripe reader is probably not set up properly. I see no reason why the entry method would have any effect on the voucher itself, or how the voucher system works. Having said that, POS 2009 could be different. However, I still don't see why using a mag stripe, barcode, or manual entry would make any difference in how the system behaves, since they're simply different methods to enter the cards ID number.

  • I have learned with MS POS2009 that the gift card acct# has to be on track 2 and in a format like

xxxxxxxxxx=xxxxxxxxx    (first set of numbers being the account number followed  by the ( = ) then ( xxxx ) being read as expiration date and filler numbers to follow.   if it is not encoded like this it will make you program crash.  ex. ( xxxxxxxxxxxxx )  will not work.
