Last year in summer Dynamics 365 for Marketing got available for most of the customer in Europe. Microsoft created a completely new application that is optimized for the Unified Interface. It seems like Microsoft wants to forget the unsuccessful acquisition of MarketingPilot to integrate marketing automation functionalities and started from scratch.

A lot of decision maker are now facing the question if they should implement the well-tried solution from ClickDimensions or rather get the official Microsoft product. It is not easy to give a clear answer to that question, because it also depends on personal preferences.

In this article, we would like to give you a brief comparison of the differences in price and usability of ClickDimensions and Dynamics 365 for Marketing.

When Microsoft announced the pricing model for Dynamics 365 for Marketing a lot of people were deterred. The price was dependent on the overall number of contacts in the system. No matter if they are active or inactive. Especially companies with a high number of contacts weren’t pleased with that offer.

But Microsoft tends to care about customer satisfaction, so they decided to change the pricing model and linked the price to the contacts that are used for marketing activities. That means, if we are referring to contacts, we mean the contacts in the system that are used for marketing activities.

Pricing for Dynamics 365 for Marketing

Customers with a Customer Engagement Plan and a minimum of 10 licenses get the marketing solution for no further costs. But this free license is limited at 2.000 contacts.

The number of contacts can be extended by 8.000 for 506 € per month.

Any other customer that has a Customer Engagement plan, but less than 10 licenses, must pay 632.50 € for the first 10.000 marketing contacts.

5.000 additional contacts cost 210,80 €.

The stand-alone version costs 1.264,90 € a month and applies for the first 10.000 contacts.

Additional 5.000 contacts cost 210,80 €.

The number of emails that can be sent in a month is linked to the number of contacts used for marketing purposes.

10 x the number of marketing contacts = amount of emails that can be sent in a month.

Pricing for ClickDimensions

 

ClickDimensions offers two licenses. The price depends on the number of emails that can be sent. But also, functionality differs in the two offered license types. While comparing ClickDimensions and Dynamics 365 for marketing one can only compare the business license of ClickDimensions with Dynamics 365 for Marketing.

The basic license costs 431 € a month and can send up to 50.000 emails per year.

The business license costs 605 € a month and can send up to 200.000 emails per year.

Additionally, 100.000 emails cost 86 € or 200.000 for 173 €.

The business license includes Campaign Automation, Landing Pages, Lead Scoring, Event Management, and Survey / Subscription Management functionalities.

 

Major Differences in Usability

 

As mentioned in the introduction, Dynamics 365 for Marketing is optimized for the Unified Interface. It is still possible to access most of the features directly via the Marketing tile in Dynamics 365. The major difference lays in the integration of standard entities of Dynamics CRM. Who would have known, but standard entities are more integrated into ClickDimensions than into Dynamics 365 for Marketing.

One example is the so-called “Segment” in Dynamics 365 for Marketing. Segments are used instead of Marketing Lists. That means if you have well-maintained Marketing Lists you cannot use them anymore. Contacts need to be added to segments using queries similar to the advanced search.

For users that are not familiar with the Unified Interface, it will take some time until they get warm with Dynamics 365 for Marketing. One of the positive points is that Microsoft tries to realize all functionalities within their own applications or platforms. Social Marketing Integration via LinkedIn, the questionnaires on Voice of the Customer and Event Management is realized via Microsoft Portals. Thanks to the new UI, everything looks a bit fresher.

ClickDimensions on the other hand strongly integrates the standard entities of Dynamics 365 in their solution. Obviously, the reason for this is because ClickDimensions is an add-in and not a standalone solution. Users that are familiar with the desktop interface of Dynamics 365 can usually directly start to work with ClickDimensions. Via the ClickDimensions tile within the standard UI, all the features are accessible. The functionalities and entities look like they were out-of-the-box. The features seem to be a bit more mature in ClickDimensions, which is not a big surprise. The solution has been available for quite some time and is constantly being improved.

Regarding the reporting capabilities, ClickDimensions is slightly ahead. Since all the data is stored in the Dynamics 365 storage, the data can be used easily for custom dashboards and workflows.

Conclusion

Since Microsoft changed the pricing model for Dynamics 365, both solutions are a good buy. Before that, we strongly preferred ClickDimensions. In the end, it depends a bit on personal preference. If you want something completely new and you are already familiar with the Unified Interface, get Dynamics 365 for Marketing. If you want to use the “old” desktop interface of Dynamics 365, we suggest you purchase ClickDimensions. Both solutions offer similar functionalities on a very advanced level. Dynamics CRM on-premise user got only choice – ClickDimensions. For the reason that Dynamics 365 for Marketing is only available online.
