You might need to create a copy of a production database to simulate testing scenarios on the production schema and statistics or troubleshoot query performance issues without interrupting production users.
Microsoft introduces a new management command DBCC CLONEDATABASE (Transact-SQL) in SQL Server 2017 on Windows, Service Pack 4 for SQL Server 2012, Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 2 and SQL Server 2016 SP1. This command creates a new database that contains the schema of all the objects and statistics from the specified source database.
The cloning of the source database is performed by the following operations:
DBCC CLONEDATABASE (AXDB, AXDB_Clone); GO
The command that is used to create the cloned database is safe, as it creates an internal snapshot of the source database to create the cloned copy, without causing any blocking during the database creation. The cloned copy will have the same schema and statistics as the source database, but no data.
It’s not replacement of Dynamics Performance Analyzer, however it’s way to copy querystore to review perf issues remotely.
