Hello mates, I hope you all are fine, i need your help for an encountering issue. My customer normally used to use excel to define automatically an unique id to identify his projects.
Every new projects made in the excel file, he increments + 1 to the ID number like the example below :
In his file, the last project have the id number 4500, do you know if i can make a field "ID" and give him a start id of 4500 and he will automatically increment of +1 after every new projects created please ?
Take a look at this site, if thats not an option, there are ways to do this with a plugin.
Hello Mike Hastings ,
Thanks you for your help and answer, i have tried it and its working perfectly. However, i have 2 issues with this :
1 : Is it possible to enable the autonumbering process on a condition ? in my case it should start the process of autonumbering "ID TEST 2" field only if the "nature" field is equal to "Evolution"
2 : For example i have created an order, it had the value of 5002 in "ID TEST 2" field, after i deleted it, the new created order had the value of 5003, I thought it would be 5002 on the new one because the old has been deleted. The point number 2 isnt important , but if someone could help me with the number 1 that would be very great please mates.Best regards.
If you are ok with the overhead, this is an option
He uses a staging table and workflows to autonumber how you described in point 1, but it does consist of a new record for each auto number (you could delete them later)
If this isnt an option, you would need to go to a plugin with a staging table (it just wouldnt create a record for each new number)
For point 2 - You should let the deleted record have that number, it would be a risk to bring it back (we tell our customers to deactivate, dont delete), but if a record is deleted from, say, 1000 numbers ago youd have to track that specific number to know it was available.
Hello Mike Hastings,
Didnt succeeded to with the jonasrp method :( , do you know if there is another solution please ? that would be great :/.
Actually i have succeeded to make the autonumbering field but the major problem is that field increment +1 after every new order. I wanted to increment +1 this field only if the field nature of is equal to Evolution, because its the only team who need this autonumbering feature.
If that one doesnt work, youll want to write a plugin.
You can make a staging entity with, say, one record for each type of number configuration (EX. Account, with 4 account types, and a different prefix for each of the 4 would require 4 records in the stage table).
Then on create of the record that needs an ID, you can call the stage table for the 'next number' - within it you can track the prefix based on the type.
Edit: I purposely have not mentioned flow/power automate due to it being a background and not realtime process, if it is background you run a risk of duplicate numbers.
You can use power automate to achieve it easily.
for example, i test in the custom entity.
1.Go Power Automate(https://us.flow.microsoft.com/en-us/ ) to create automate flow.
and select correct environment In the upper right corner of the page.
2.Add ‘When a record is created’ trigger.
3.Add ‘List records’ action.
use craeaed on and id fields lohic name in the filter.
4.Add ‘Compose’ action, and ‘’apply to each’ action will add automatically.
5.Add ‘Condition’ action.
In ‘Yes’ branch, add ‘Update a record’ action,
Note: ID field data type is 'whole number'.
When latest record id is 4500, and new record’s nature field is Evolution.
When new record ’s nature field is not Evolution.

Hello Leah Ju, thanks you very much for your answer, i think my organisation doesnt have Power automate licences :(
I test with jonasrp method, it can work when you add one condition in it, the following detailed steps.
1.create a temporary entity and and an autonumber field.
2.Create a workflow in order entity..
(1) Set trigger.
(2) Add ‘Check condition’ step.
(3) Add ‘Create Record’ step under condition.
(4) Add ‘Update Record’ step.
(5) Save and active it.
Thanks you very very much, It's working perfectly you guys are my savers <3 !
Just for my information , have i to add a "finish step" in my workflow or its optionnal ? and have i to set a condition to others purpose of my "nature field list" ?
Best regards :)
I try to add 'complete'/'successful' steps at the end, but sometimes I miss them, I also try to do 'default conditions' to end as well - specifically speaking to Dynamics Workflows.
In my case i think its optionnal to add it right ? Adding the finish step is a best practice recommandation ?
In my opinion, adding ‘finish step’ is optional, and you don’t need set other conditions if you don’t have other operations under these options of nature field list.
You can set it as screenshot shown if you want to add finish step.
If you are confused about whether to use finish step or not, you can refer to the following link, which discusses this issue.
and can you click Yes under "Did this answer your question?" to close this thread if your problem solved.
Thanks you very much for your explications.
