Running Windows 10 and Visual Studio 2015.
I downloaded the new Microsoft Dynamics 365 Developer Toolkit via a Microsoft VSIX Installer.
When I tried to install I get "an object not set to instance of an object".
I also noted that when I go to "Extensions and Updates" in Visual Studio to look at my installed extensions I also get a prompt with "An object not set to an instance of an object".
The toolkit installer log file gave me the following information:

I assume you are referring to the Dynamics 365 for Operations toolkit? This cannot run on a local machine. It needs to run on a downloaded demo/dev VM as it has some dependencies on software which is installed on the VM.
The provided developer toolkit is an update on earlier versions of the toolkit.
Hello Andre, no I'm referring to the new development toolkit, this tool gives you more development options for CRM directly on VS.
I found out the problem:
It seems that I needed to reset the Visual Studio user settings:
I followed the following steps:
and run devenv /resetuserdata.
Expect, that all of your user settings such as Visual Studio layout, linked Microsoft account or start page disappear.
After that I ran the Toolkit installer and it worked fine.
Hope this helps.
