We have products with specs and accessories that differ widely based on product type. Products generally have a quantity of 1 (each Product ID/SKU is for a single unique item). Some fields will be common across all product types; some will be common across similar product types; some will be unique to a given product type. The potential number of custom fields will be huge.
I'd prefer to not use custom entities because I want typical Sales/Product functionality. I don't want forms to differ so much that there is a performance impact in loading views. The unique fields are needed for initial data entry. After entry, I'd like to display the data in a standard spec sheet layout (preferably in a read-only tab in the form).
Any suggestions for implementing this?
Since I want the detailed field data gathered at the product level, is there value in having separate related entities with the field data that rolls up to display on the Product entity form?
We have not finished defining the fields needed for all product types yet, so I don't have a feel for the total custom fields we will have.
I will suggest to create separate entity, which has relationship with product entity.
On Product entity, you need to show add just lookup of this entity and in custom entity you can create all different attribute about characteristics of product.
This approach is will useful if you are showing on product information from product entity in views..
