In our process, accounts are entered as prospects whilst they are in the sales cycle (meaning an open opportunity) until we close the opportunity as won or lost. In either case, we go back to the account and modify the account type to be a suspect if it is lost or a client if it is won. since Sales Managers often forget, I would like to automate that function, meaning as soon as Closed as won or lost is chosen, it modifies the Account type field in Account. Is this possible?
Or do you have other types of process that could replace the one we have in place right now that would prevent errors?
What I understand from your description is that you need to update the account type, when the opportunity is closed.
This can be achieved via a simple workflow. please refer to the below screen.
Hope this helps,

You can use a workflow to do this, please be mindful of the conditions as you will not want to do this again and again for e.g. if you have an account of type 'client' you will not want to change it to 'suspect' if second opportunity is lost.
So your workflow will have conditions like this:
