In the legacy client there was the option to switch between activities with 'Next' and 'Previous' buttons. Then in the UI this was replaced with the 'Open record set' button in the top left of the activity form, as demonstrated on Accounts here:
However, it seems this feature is removed in the newest update? If you open an activity it opens it on top like so, but there's no Open record set button to switch between activities:
Even on a standard activity form (not on this popup) the button isn't there. Can someone confirm if this feature has been removed, and if so is there a plan to replace it, or is the new process to close the activity and then open the next one?
The modal dialog feature was introduced in the 2020 release wave 1 update.
Currently, the form of the Activity is forced to open through the modal dialog, which is what you are experiencing.
However, other entities, such as Account and Contact, do not open forms through the modal dialog. You can still use the 'Open record set' button.
So, the 'Open record set' button is not available only on Activity forms, because it is already opened in the modal dialog, while the 'Open record set' button can be used on other entity forms.
In addition, I think the modal dialog does not affect you to switch records quickly, because when you close the modal dialog, the original view still exists, and you can directly open another Activity record. In other words, the modal dialog and the 'Open record set' button do not conflict in function.
