Our current environment is AX 2012 R3 on Win2012 with SQL 2012. The plan to migrate to Dynamics 365 is in the works, and isn't slated to complete until late 2022/early 2023. In the meantime, I am considering upgrading SQL 2012 to SQL 2016.
What known benefits does Dynamics AX 2012 get by upgrading SQL 2012 to SQL 2016? Performance? This will tell me if upgrading is worth the effort vs just staying status quo until we get to AX 365.
I don't predict major performance improvements by only upgrading SQL Server. A major advantage would be extending SQL Server support from Microsoft. I’m not sure, but I think SQL Server 2012 support will end in early 2022.
AX2012 R3 doesn't fully support SQL 2016. your SharePoint installation will not be supported and the web portal will not work in 2016.
I know this for sure as we had upgraded from ax2012Fp to AX2012 R3 and Windows 2016 and SQL 2016. Until I upgrade to 365 i have to work with third party software fro my web portal requirements
