Weekly Dynamic: Shrink an account segment
Featured Post
I want to stop and hang out for a minute on Leslie Vail’s post on Reshuffling your Account Structure.
Let’s pull out one part of this post. If you need to shrink the size of a segment in GP, you can do it. You’ll need to use PSTL to shrink the data adding spaces where you want to reduce the size.
For example, I had someone recently who had a six digit segment with either 000000 or 000001 in the field. Among other things they wanted to shrink this to either a 0 or a 1. We used PSTL to update these to either ‘1 ‘ or ‘0 ‘. That’s a 1 or a zero with 5 spaces behind it. We didn’t have to force the spaces, just updating to 1 or 0 left the account with the blank spaces.
After that we run Administration | Utilities | System | Reconcile and reconcile shrinks up the accounts. You don’t have to change your account segment setup, reconcile does that as part of the process.
Leslie covers a lot more in her post, but I wanted to highlight just that portion because I think it’s important all by itself.
