Can you someone share with me the recommended tools by Microsoft, to design and deploy extensions for MS Dynamics 365 for Financials?
We need to use standard development environment only for now.
you can follow this series.
I've looked through the link in your reply. I can write extensions in C# if need be, but it looks to me like this approach is primarily oriented toward creating generalized extensions to potentially be available to the entire community. As an example, the approach includes submitting a written description of the proposed extension to Microsoft for their approval, etc.
Over the years, I've done quite a number of extensions to MS-Dynamics ERP screens. These are usually just "one-off's" to meet a specific customer's needs.
In more than one post, I've seen a cryptic sort of response indicating that the generalized approach is the only approach available "for now". Can you (or anyone at Microsoft) give us any additional guidance on this? Specifically, will we be able to customize and extend the D365 BE screens for any particular customer using Azure tables and PowerApps?
It seems like this would be a much faster (and consequently less expensive way) to customize D365 BE screens. I'm guessing this is where we are headed, but I'd certainly like to know-- one way or the other.
I also think this would make D365 BE are far more attractive proposition than QuickBooks. As a business grows, its needs generally becomes more complex. One of the primary reasons users move from QB to another ERP, involves the capacity to tailor the ERP to their specific needs.
Once again, any guidance would be appreciated...
Thanks for the detailed question. You and Mohana are correct that the only current customization capabilities for Dynamics 365 for Financials are generalized apps published to AppSource and available for all customers. In case you are interested in learning more about the current extension model, refer to Extending Microsoft Dynamics NAV Using Extension Packages (msdn.microsoft.com/.../extending-microsoft-dynamics-nav-using-extension-packages) for building an extension and aka.ms/AppsforFinancials(PartnerSource access required) for publishing an app on AppSource. As you mention there has been “for now” references to the generalized approach, indicating a change is coming. I would recommend you look at the Announcing the Preview of Development Tools for Dynamics NAV blog (blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../announcing-the-preview-of-development-tools-for-dynamics-nav) for information on new tools being built for creating customizations for Dynamics NAV and Dynamics 365 for Financials. These tools along with deployment changes will enable tenant specific extensions (i.e. customizations) for Dynamics 365 for Financials.
You mention Azure tables and Power Apps as a way to customize and extend D365 pages. We aren’t looking at these as ways to customize and extend pages in Dynamics 365 for Financials, like with the development tools for Dynamics NAV. We are working at supporting apps written in technologies like Power Apps to integrate to Dynamics 365 for Financials using a service API. As a matter of fact, you can use published web services to integrate to Dynamics 365 for Financials today.
Thanks, Daryl. I've followed the links you listed above, but I am still a bit fuzzy on one question. It looks like the new "Development Tools for Dynamics NAV" that are currently in "Preview" will allow for individual tenant customizations, but will this also be the new preferred route for creating generalized customizations? When I create a customization using these new tools, will I deploy these to the AppSource so that these can be chosen just like that apps that are currently there?
Correction: Will the new "Development Tools for Dynamics NAV" become the preferred method for creating "generalized extensions" as well as individual tenant "customizations"?
Yes, the new "Development Tools for Dynamics NAV" will be the preferred method for creating "generalized extensions" for AppSource as well as individual tenant "customizations".
rechecking: Can we already develop apps using new development tools Preview and submit to MS to publish on app source?
An app created using the preview tools can't be submitted at the current time to publish on AppSource. An announcement will be made when the tool and process is ready for the publishing of Apps created using the "Development Tools for Dynamics NAV".
