How can I assign a query object in the dataset / dataitem section of a report object in AL?
As far as I know you cannot do it directly. But if you need you can use Integer table and then assign values to the variables or you can put values to temporary table and show it.
So what is the point of a Query object if you can't assign it to a Report object?
It is used for calculation and for combining data if needed. But not for the presentation of the data. For that you need to do some "workarounds". We use a lot of queries but there where we need to have some dataset which are later used in code.
