Is there any way to customise the XML layer used in the Word templates to include the Document Date. I have imported opening transactions for my customers with the original document date, but used a default posting date for the data transfer date. The options on the statement are only either posting date or due date. I want to show document date.
Don't think there is any document date in Customer Statement.
Since you can't change the existing report, you will need to replicate the Customer Statement report to a new report and add the document date there.
That is what I was looking at - but I can't see the Document Date in the xml object - so that suggests to me a higher level of change is needed. Any way to edit which fields are in the xml?
You can't use existing report because there is no way to edit the available fields as of now.
You will need to duplicate the report and save it as a new report. You can then add the necessary fields in the new report.
Sorry if I am not being clear. I have duplicated the report and am working with a new report, but the underlying xml that contains all the fields does not include Document Date - so my question is - can that xml be changed or a copy of it created and what tools would be needed to do that? Would I need to do that is Visual Studio or how would that happen.
So regardless of the specifics of this report, how do we either edit or create custom xml's for reports?
I am talking about extension here. Create a new report extension. In the new report, you can add any field that you want in the data set. Then you can add the field to the rdlc or doc layout.
I will work my developer team to do this.

Thanks very much Steven. That is a fantastic article and tells me everything I need to know:
1. Need to make sure we have that on premise environment
2. Need to have the DEV licensing
3. It is outside my knowledgebase at this stage and will need my developers
