Overview

On November 9th Microsoft released the long awaited Developer Toolkit for Dynamics 365. This is the first updated version of the toolkit we've had in a few product releases itself. Not only has it been released but the development team has been hard at work correcting issues with it which is extremely positive if your looking to bring this into your development toolkit.

The toolkit itself brings a wide verity of tools and simplifies life a bit through functionality like deployment of custom code and publishing resources through the Visual Studio environment. The following project templates get created inside of visual studio after installation:

  • Customizations Project - This will allow you to access all customizations within a given solution.
  • Dynamics 365 Plug-in Library - This is a project that will be used for creating new Plug-ins.
  • Dynamics 365 Package - This is a project that allows you to create new deployment packages; if your not sure what this is check out my previous post: https://community.dynamics.com/crm/b/cosmanscrmjourney/archive/2016/04/11/crm-package-deployer. This is something that you should become fimilar with as Microsoft is is very invested in the deployment packager.
  • Dynamics 365 Workflow Activity Library - This project will be used for creating new Workflow Activities.
  • New Visual Studio Solution Template for Dynamics 365 - This template allows you to create  your own Visual Studio templates to be reused by yourself or share with others.
  • Dynamics Crm Mobile Phone App - A sample app for phones.
  • Dynamics Crm Mobile Store App - A sample app for the Windows store.
  • Dynamics Crm Mobile Universal App - A sample app for the unverisal microsoft space.

Installation

The installation of it is pretty straight forward. Simply download it; select your the Visual Studio version you'd like for it to install on and it's done.

1. Selecting the version you'd like to install the Toolkit on.

2. Installation complete

3. Open Visual studio and select New Project to access your project templates and get started.

I hope this has helped with what comes with the Toolkit and how to get it all installed. In part 2 of the series we're going go through the Customizations project discussing the different parts of it.
