I've had a Record Creation and Update Rule running with an item attached to it. I've changed that item (the process) by deleting it and adding some new to the rule.
Now the old item (workflow definition) and one running instance (workflow activation) are still active (see screenshot).
Problem is they are using a field defined in a solution I have to remove and because of this dependency solution cannot be removed.
I already tried changing stated and deleting for both without success. Trying in PowerShell I receive an error like "Cannot update/delete a published item" (I cannot unpublish it either or at least I don't know how in PS).
Trying the same in browser (web app) I receive an error like "Cannot deactivate/delete a system generated workflow".
I'm using Dynamics 365 CRM Online (2016) and therefore my capabilities are limited to what I can do there.Anyone got some hint, idea or even solution how I can get rid of this lost rule item workflow?!
You can try solution upgrade/patching.
There is an option to patch a solution that contains components that are not necessary anymore. This will enable you to create a patch, stage the solution (holding solution), and after the solution is imported, apply the solution upgrade.

that workflow is referring to the record creation rule, so, maybe, try to deactivate the rule?
At the end I was forced to reset the environment. But this sounds like a perfect approach for the next time. Therefore validating Aric's post as answer.
