Hi - I want to populate a value on Contact form based on account look up value from Account form.
Let's suppose I have an account look up field on Contact form called 'Company' so when I select a value from 'Company' (that's actually account record) I want to extract a value 'Type' and auto fill a dropdown field on Contact form. But if there's no 'Type' value in Account then it should be just blank.
Hope it's clear if not please let me know I'll post few screenshots. Thanks
What you should do is to write code that handles change of "Company" field, checks it for null, uses Xrm.WebApi.retrieveRecord to retrieve account record based on the id and populate your Type field.
Thanks Andrew - Can I do using workflows ? if so how? Thanks
You can do that using workflow but because of the nature how workflows are implemented you will not see the change immediately after lookup is changed but only after you clicked "Save" button. Here is what you should do in order to populate that field:
1. Create a real-time workflow that handles Create and Update of Contact.
2. Add the "Update" step to Workflow and Choose your contact as an entity to update.
3. Open properties of the step and update your Category field using value from parent account.
4. Save and publish workflow.
