How to start to use it?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

After having set up Dynamics NAV server on Win 08 server and Dynamics NAV client on Win 7 enterprise machine, how to start to use it? Why can't I see any services of Dynamics inside Win 08 server?

Many Thanks & Best Regards, Hua Min

With the screen above you can press alse "Repair". Then at the end I assume it will report errors? In the last installation screen that shows the completion status, if it has errors click on the link that shows the detailed Log.

If you tell us about this log content here, perhaps someone can point you to what goes wrong...

The above screen shot is what you should get when you run setup.exe a second time. I am not sure why certain components are missing, it could be that they were not selected during the install. If you click on the "Add or remove components" in the above screen, you will be able to go in and see what has or has not been installed, and then make sure that if the Services and/or Clients were not installed as noted in earlier posts, that you select them and continue clicking through the screens to install those components. You should then have a full working install.

Thanks. When I run its setup.exe file in Win 08 server, I get this

My question is, why last time's setup was incomplete.

Please read my above post in full. I mentioned you can install/setup NAV on Win08 Server, so if you cannot, we need a lot more details. Please post why you cannot set up NAV on Win08? What errors are you getting if any? What issues are you seeing? What setup are you trying to do? Please provide the issue, the symptoms of the issue, what you are expecting to happen so that we have a full view of what you are running into. The question does not give me any details. Thank you for any additional information you can provide.

Thanks. My question now is, why I can't set up "en_dynamics_nav_2009_r2_x86" on Win 08 server.

    HuaMin,

We are not wasting our time answering questions, that is why we are here. I am simply saying with NAV, it is required to work through a partner for the purchase, so I was trying to suggest to work more closely with a partner as you will need one eventually if you decide on NAV, and it would be good to have a good customer/partner relationship. They can answer all these questions also at one time, so that was the reason for the suggestion. I will not always be on this forum to help, but others also answer on this forum. To your question, you can install/setup NAV on Win08 Server, so I would need more information on what issues you are having with setup.

    Thanks Nick.

Frankly I am the only person who is going to investigate whether Dynamic Nav is feasible to be used for our company. Can you please every time have shorter reply instead (I am afraid of that you feel you're wasting your time on replying to me)? My question now is, why I can't set up "en_dynamics_nav_2009_r2_x86" on Win 08 server.

    Many Thanks & Best Regards,

Re: How to start to use it?

If you want to make sure to install everything on one machine you can select Custom and then select the Classic Client and RTC to install if they are not already. I would say based on the install questions you may want to engage your partner to help out as you may have many questions with configuring the RTC to work. If all on the same machine it is not difficult, but if you are doing true 3-Tier there is going to be a lot of setup on network/AD side to make sure it works properly. I would highly suggest working with a partner to get a demo as I believe that would be your quickest way to ramp up on the NAV install/configuration. Thank you.

Thanks a lot Nick. Should I now proceed to run setup again by selecting Custom in the server side?

Re: How to start to use it?

Those are the only two services that exist for NAV. The Application components would be the client installs which would only be there if you selected to install the Clients, Classic Client and Role Tailored Client. These shortcuts would show up under the All Programs but not in any sub folder as they are just at the 'Start>All Programs'. if you want to see what was installed go to 'Control Panel>Uninstall a Program'. Find 'Microsoft Dynamics 2009 R2' and click 'Change'. This will relaunch the install and you can now select 'Add or Remove Components'. You will now see what is installed and what is not installed. Again, if you are actually doing a 3-Tier install, and you are on the Server, you probably do not have the Classic Client or Role Tailored Client installed, but you certainly can install them and test it out. Hopefully I am understanding the question.
