We are facing a challenge with Business Central that has started to feel almost impossible. We have an item sold in various heights and widths. We don't want to create a new item for each dimension because the production BOM and routing are always the same for one square meter of the product. Creating millions of new items with the same structure but different dimensions would be inefficient. The items are sold in pieces, but manufactured in m².
Here’s the issue: we can define how many m² one piece represents if all variants are the same size, but they are not. For example, I need to define that 1 piece of Variant A equals 3.2 m² and 1 piece of Variant B equals 6.1 m².
Maybe I’m missing something because I don’t have all the information, but if you’re already using variants, why do you need to differentiate them again using units of measure? Variants, by definition, represent variations of an item, such as different colors, sizes, etc. For instance, your variant name or description would state the m² size such as 3.2 m² but the unit of measure would be pieces.
