Is there a way to control expense entries in G/L or Purchase module against Budget entries in BC?

A client wants to enter expenses in G/L or Purchasing module and be able to check the value of the expense against a budget. Is there some kind of standard functionality in BC to implement this or a best practice?

Hi

There is no standard functionality related to budget control in Business Central.
The built‑in G/L Budget feature is the standard way to compare actuals vs. budget. It does not block or warn the users during posting, its purely reporting, not budget control.

Hello,

Business Central supports G/L Budgets out of the box, so you can compare expenses entered through G/L journals or purchase documents against a budget using G/L Budgets, Account Schedules, or the Budget Comparison (Power BI) report. However, this is monitoring only — standard BC does not block or warn users automatically during posting if they exceed the budget. Best practice is to set up budgets (optionally by dimensions like department/project) and review budget vs. actual regularly. If the client needs real-time budget checking or blocking at posting, that requires customization or a third-party budget control extension.
