Hello,
I am wondering what is the best way for interfacing to SQL database from Dynamics. What best architecture set-up should be used to:
create a basic front-end in Dynamics which would then launch a SQL procedure and return basic data to a Dynamics front-end
Issue is some of our finance processes are not handled by Dynamics but users would like to use 'all in-one' experience.

Which database do you mean? The actual F&O database? Or an external database? In Azure or on-premises? Is it be available from the internet (assuming that you're talking about Microsoft-hosted F*O instance)?
Also, can you please confirm that you're talking about Dynamics 365 Finance? You mentioned just "Dynamics", which includes many other products as well.

Can you elaborate what is your 'all-in-one' experience? What is missing in the standard application for your finance processes?
Note that you can't directly access the cloud hosted database in a production environment. Can you tell what exactly needs to be integrated? Then we can help providing the best option which would be supported by Microsoft Dynamics 365.

A number of procedures to read an parse bank statements have been developed and dump data into a SQL database. We'd like to access some of that data for the users directly into a Dynamics front-end (i.e. so to the user they are not leaving Dynamics).
Dynamics is on Azure. External Database is not but could be migrated if necessary.
Wondering what is possible.

I see a few options.
You can write code to connect to external database. There is no special support for this scenario in F&O, but you can write any code you want.
Another approach would be copying the data to F&O. It may actually be a better approach, because working with the data in F&O is then very easy. If you call a SQL procedure and you want to show the data in a form, you'll have to parse the data and put it into a temporary table, which means extra work and it may also be worse from performance perspective.
If you need the data just for reporting purpose, another option may be including it in Power BI reports.
For this requirement, you need to develop an integration. I do agree with Martin that it would be easier to have the data synchronized in Dynamics 365 F&O. Next to this, we have an ISV solution at To-Increase called Connectivity Studio. In this solution, you can configure integrations instead of doing it via development. We support to connect to a local database via Azure Service Bus.
