template for master item/product import

hi wondering if anyone has any advise on how best to set up our master item template and information that we then populate and upload to our business central?

ideally i need to find a comprehensive master item template for product/item upload into business central that does the following:

  • We have an eCommerce store (Magento) so keen to have additional fields like long and short description and other fields pertinent to eCommerce operations
  • On this we also have 3-4 subcategories as part of the eCommerce structure that i think we will also need to set out in Business Central
  • As well as items that are used to assemble kits (to make our saleable items that are then installed by our field service team)
  • And items that are tax free as well we those that occur with tax

I believe that with the templates we can also set up dynamic editing and import via excel spreadsheets. So any advice on how to do this successfully would also be great.

Thanks in advance,

    Hi,

I suggest you to use The configuration Packages.

With the configuration Packages you can specify tables (item, tax group, Item categories....) that you like to fill out with your data, export as Excel (this creates an Excel File with a template with your table's fields) then fill the file with your data and finally import and apply them to D365BC.

    • For the additional fiels, you should create an extension (a table extension in order to add fields to the Item table and a Page extension in order to show your added fields in the Item card page)
    • For you subcategories you can use the Item Category (that you can also export to your Excel file with the Configuration Package)
    • You can use the BOM Assemply for your assembly kits.
    • About taxes please check this https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/localfunctionality/unitedstates/us-sales-tax it has more info of how to configure your taxes.

More infos on Configuration Packages  : https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/business-central/admin-how-to-prepare-a-configuration-package

I hope this helps you and answers your question.
