Entering New Product - Error The Record Already Exists

We several people entering new products and keep getting the error that the record already exists.  I have found that I can solve the problem by clearing the status list.  But is there a way to prevent the error from occurring?

    Can you explain with more details how you're entering new products? And what you mean under "clearing the status list"?
