Hi everyone,
I have installed AX 2012 with Cumulative Hotfix 1 and 2 on a multiple machine environment (one VM for SQL, one for SharePoint/EP, one for the AOS, and one for the client). Nothing fancy, just a normal install.
When the installation finishes on the client, I can run the client and begin the initialization checklist (which I have completed). No problem. The client uses a shared configuration file.
However, when I try to launch the client a second time, I get the error:
"An invalid directory structure for Microsoft Dynamics AX was detected. The subdirectory C:\Windows\system32\\bin does not exist."
So I look at the properties for the shortcut in the Start Menu, and there is no "Start in" folder. When I put that in (or launch AX32.exe from the Client folder), I don't get the error. However, the splash screen appears and the the AX client crashes with no message. The exception logged in Event Viewer is:
Application: Ax32.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: System.AccessViolationException
Stack:
at <Module>._wWinMainCRTStartup()
Also, just to expound a little, I have tried the client installation on multiple machines with the same result. I can also connect to EP
Has anyone run into this before, or does anyone have advice as to how to resolve it?

Clearing the .auc file helped me as well!
Refreshing the configuration in the AX Config Utility resolved the issue for me.
This could be also a problem in registry too - consult this post too for resolution: blogs.msdn.com/.../running-ax-2009-client-raises-error-quot-an-invalid-directory-structure-for-microsoft-dynamics-ax-was-detected-quot.aspx
Hi Matthew,
I solved the problem just delete file .AUC in folder C:\Users\Administrator.<DOMAIN NAME>\AppData\Local. After delete the file, it going well.
Thanks ..
additionally after a long drawn battle this is what helped me:
a) uninstalled the client components
b) deleted the client directory (located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics AX\60)
c) restart the install process with install client components option
d) open MS DAX configuration utility.
verify the details.
in connection tab click refresh button.
use manage button and save the configuration.
e) double click the configuration file
checklist splash-screen appears.
hope it helps.
My problem was when I used configuration file (.axc) from 32 bit machine on a new 64bit. After I changed path for bindir, datadir and directory (in each configuration file) from c:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics AX\Client\...... to c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics AX\\ Client\ ......
Everything went back to normal.
Hope this helps ....
Hi Jason,
I believe we did end up having to alter the shortcut properties to point to the right path.
However, the main issue (which caused the crash) was a bad connection file. When you update the connection settings, you need to click the button where the server is specified (I believe it states Process or Refresh or something). I apologize for being vague, but I'm not currently working at an AX 2012 computer. After that you can save the file. If you look at your AXC file and it is only a few K in size, then you know you didn't click the button (actually reading the file will show some XML as well).
I hope this is clear - Microsoft charged me for this one (which is ridiculous since the product doesn't state what is causing the problem). Please don't hesitate to post back if I'm less than clear here :)
Did you ever resolve this (please don't say re-install! :-) ) We are having this same issue.
