CC field using email address doesn't work

On the Contact form, I have a custom field called "parent email". For example I have a contact record called "Child" with email as child@test.com. The the "parent email" field has value "parent@test.com". When I manually create an email, type in parent@test.com in the CC field (meaning CC the email to parent". As soon I tab out the CC field, it changes to the "Child" record look up. The result is that the email will not be sent to parent@test.com. How can I handle this? Thanks
