SL 7.0 - FP1/SP2 performance

Posted on by 230

Hi All,

Has anyone implemented SL 7.0 - FP1/SP2 in a complex production environment and, if so, I was hoping to get some feedback on how clean it is or isn't? We are planning to implement it in a complex multi-company, project, and distribution  environment (3rd party apps also) and even though we have done some initial testing, we have not released it to production.

Thanks.

Bob Remick

I haven't implemented FP1 at any clients yet, but it does have some compelling features available. We didn't start doing much with v7 until SP1 was out.

Thanks Paul.  Have you actually implmented the Feature Pack 1 in SL 7.0?

    Hi Bob,

There is some marginal increase in network bandwidth requirements for verion 7.0 over prior versions, so I suggest making sure that the network infrastructure is fully optimized. Otherwise you may see some complaints about screen load time. Sometimes networks are only configured to provide minimally acceptable performance (and run for years that way), which when faced with a large-scale client application upgrade, in aggregate, can be pushed a little too far. Version 7 is a full conversion of the application screens to the .NET platform.

Also, the menuing system is different in v7.0 and requires that an xml file be regenerating for each user / company any time there is a change in the screen menus. At initiali go-live you may be making a lot of menu changes, which can cause people to think that the application is taking a long time to launch when it is really just rebuilding the menu cache at a more frequent interval than normal.

I recently upgraded a client that complained of performance slowness, but it turned out that their network was not configured well and no one had realized it until the new system was in use by everyone. The incremental increase in bandwidth (I didn't have time to quantify) was enough to push their particular configuration beyond acceptable limits. In their case there were several old switches that had been daisy chained together, and ran that way for a long time until the upgrade forced a review of the environment and it was discovered.

Also, make sure that you review the hotfixes available for the version you are installing. There was an FRx problem in particular that caused some siginificant processing bottlenecks when using Windows authentication and FRx SP10 until the hotfix was applied.
