I am trying to import an update to a managed solution. The log contains this for one item:
| 0x80045042 | The original workflow definition has been deactivated and replaced. |
but I think that was a warning not an error. There is nothing else in the log.

It's a warning message as you think. This message will be shown if a change has been made to an existing workflow and replace the previous version. This will not cause problems.
You could check the workflows you updated if they have been actived and try again.
