    I have the same question.

Is IFD necessary? I think I can just publish the claims-based authentication web through firewall (443 port forwarding, for instance).

How does IFD make it more secure?

Why are 2 people liking this.  I'm not sure what they like.  I see this as a non-answer.  I have the same question.  What is the difference between claims based authentication used with your internalcrm.domain.com and IFD (which also uses claims based authentication) but presents itself as Organization.domain.com and you expose it to the world.

So far the only difference I see is:

    1) intent of access.  InternalCRM is intended for inside your network and IFD is intended for outside, even though IFD can be accessed internal.

    2) InternalCRM uses SSO to connect to CRM and does not prompt for login.  IFD is configured with forms based authentication and requires a login every time.

Other than these 2 fairly obvious differences, is there anything else?

Both Claims and IFD use ADFS for authentication.

The easy to explain difference between them is the claims is used for internal authentication, and IFD is used for external authentication (when your users are not onsite), hence the name IFD - Internet Facing Deployment.

The configuration for IFD required a few more steps including setting up of External DNS entries.

Your Claims/Internal Url would look like this: mycrmserver.contoso.com/.../main.aspx

Your IFD/External Url would look like this: myorg.contoso.com/main.aspx

Here is a link on the TechNet site for configuration of IFD. Page has links to 2 separate configuration pages: CRM Configuration and ADFS configuration.

    Hope this helps.
