D365 CE and Power BI

Posted on by

We would like to use D365 Customer Engagement and use data export service to replicate the data to an Azure SQL database. Within D365 CE we want to embed Power BI content.

The following is mentioned in the license guide:

Dynamics 365 Enterprise Customer Engagement Plan and Customer Engagement Plan Business Application subscriptions include an option to embed Power BI content as a product feature but require users to subscribe to Power BI (free user or Power BI Pro depending on content) separately to configure access to this content. More details are available in this article.

Question:

- Is a Power BI account with a free license sufficient to view embedded Power BI content?

- Are there any limitations on viewing reports? Is it possible to use DirectQuery to the replicated database?

Thanks!

    Hi Adrian,

Thanks for your reply. This was also my assumption. However Ravi (reply below) says the contrary so still in doubt. So just to confirm, if user A with a pro license shares an app via an app workspace and embeds it into D365, can user B with a free license get access to this content?

    Hi,

    1) As per the article, it says that you need separate Power BI licence which can be a free licence, so you can view embedded Power BI content. However, it is always best to contact Microsoft Sales team to confirm any licence related queries.

    2) As long as you can see the reports in Power BI, there shouldn't be any problem in CE. You can use DirectQuery on the replicated database but it has its own limitation- Refer below-

    docs.microsoft.com/.../desktop-use-directquery

    Hope this helps.

    Hi jeoren,

I can answer your first question. Currently a Power BI account with a free license is not sufficient to view embedded Power BI content.
