GP 2009 year end update

Posted on by 65

It appears that the year end update for GP 10.0 will include SP4.  We have 72 companies in GP so any service pack update takes quite awhile.   I ran the SP4 update separately a few weeks ago hoping to avoid a long update window at year end.  It took about 15 min per company or about 18 hours.

Does anyone have any test data or information that might indicate how long the year end update might run if it does not have to apply the SP4 updates?  Does it still have to check each company and apply some other database updates specifically related to year end?

I came to this conclusion from the fact that it took the full 18 hours to run the year end update.  This was the same time that it took to run SP4.   In watching some of the update process it seemed to go through every process for each company.   When I talked to MS support about another issue, I asked them about this issue.  They said that the YE process with SP4  would replace the stored procedures and programs even if they were already at the correct version.  I did not have to uninstall SP4.

So, next year I will just wait and run the year end process with whatever SP they include.  It did not provide any time savings to run SP4 in advance.

I did discover from this forum and in the notes in the YE process that I could have run the YE process before year end as long as I did not update the tax tables to 2010.

Hello, You say you discovered that even though you had installed sp4 before the update, it still installed it during the payroll update?  Did it have to uninstall itself first?  How did you discover this?

    Thanks

Answer:  Full SP4 (18 hours) ran as part of year end even though I ran SP4 separately  in November.

I am running payroll in a few of these companies.  I know that I need to run the update.  I am just trying to get an idea if I am looking at another 18 hours or something significantly less.   I apply updates to all companies so I don't need to keep track of which companies are at different levels.

    Thanks,

    Alan

    Alan,

Guys please correct me if I am wrong I don't think you need to run any Year End Update if ..if you are not using "Payroll" in GP.

If you are using Payroll than its must .. after running your last payroll you need to do.

    Thanks

    Sandip
