Why is some fields read only in a BPF

There are about 5 fields used in the 3rd stage of an Opportunity BPF. These fields are placed on the form in a hidden section where they are all not read only, but, they are actually read only in the BPF stage when they are not supposed to be read only. Are they read only in the BPF because they are in a hidden section on the form? Otherwise, if I create a new Opportunity record, all these fields will be so editable, but for already existing records, the fields are not editable when they are supposed to. Hoe best can I make these fields always editable for already existing Opportunity records?

So, it custom fields that are in a hidden section on the form but present in the BPF. Basically all fields in the Solution Design stage:

Which fields are read only in Opportunity? I go through that form, unfortunately I didn't find any field as read only.
