RMS 2.0 to RMS2009 upgrade path - licensing

Posted on by 130
Hi Guys I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this question. I wanted to upgrade RMS 2.0 license to RMS 2009. I want to do a fresh install of 2009 so I have no issues around migration of old data, this is purely to do with licensing. I was told by the reseller that 2009 was an upgrade of RMS 2.0 and that I could simply use my current license keys. I entered the RMS key into 2009 and unsurprisingly it said it was not valid. I am still on my 'Microsoft Enhancement' plan if that helps any - but it is soon to expire. Thanks

Thanks for the detailed info - I am waiting on getting the keys from the reseller.  The reason for the upgrade is key functions such as search, adding products look and feel of the reports and general usability I feel are better for us than RMS.  As we are a small organisation these things are very important to be usable.  Import of products is nice and easy too - I will be moving away from our current system so all these factors help reduce costs and allow us to move to an MS SQL based product which will be easier to integrate with our existing online store.

Your RMS Reseller would need to contact their Microsoft Distributor and order a POS 2009 upgrade license for you (one for each register). As long as you are on a current Maintainence plan throw MS the upgrade keys should be free, but they still have be ordered. The real question is what are your motives for upgrading. As much as I like POS 2k9's look and feel, the direction of the software does not seem promising. It seems that Microsoft's long-term goal is to migrate to a retail software called Dynamics Retail for AX. RMS user will get a license to this when it becomes available (sometime in 2015) but POS user are not slated to do so. So we usually have a chat with each of our customers interested in upgrading before we put the order through so they know exactly what they are getting now and in the future.

Hi Simon - thanks for the reply, I tried that earlier today, they keep repeating that I should increase my subscription.. My Enhancement package has not expired yet - so I dont understand why they have taken this approach. I asked for clarification so fingers crossed I should get some keys...

Hi Muktadir. Just contact your RMS provider and they will be able to provide you with POS 2009 and the relevant product keys. Regards. Simon.
