Technical upgrade to 2013 changes collation of database

Posted on by

During upgrade from 2009R2 to 2015, we had an issue. When we connect a 2013 developer client to the 2009R2 database, it asks to convert the database. After this (technical) convertion the collation have been changed from Danish_Norwegian_CI_AS to Danish_Greenlandic_100_CI_AS.
Before the upgrade step, the database was set to Windows collation - Danish, Norwegian.
The consequence are that some special norwegian letters are unreadable. As far as I'm concerned, we have no control over this upgrade step.
Have anybody experienced anything similar?
Does anyone have solution for us?

PS: We tried to put the database in single user mode, changed collation to Norwegian. After starting service tier and wait for synchronization to finish, the data are still unreadable.

Regards, Gunnar

Forgot to mention: We tested some more, and found out that the data in the tables looked ok with norwegian letters and correct sort order. Only trouble with captions in objects.

Yes, it was in this step 8 it changed collation for some reason. As I mentioned, we tried to do the next step (single mode, alter database to new collation), but it didn't look right at first sight. All the table the captions inside the objects still have special norwegian letters are which shows up wrong. We also see in SQL MS that the collation are still set to the wrong setting at table/field level. We tested some more, and found out that if we import all unmodified objects again as FOB, and saved/compiled all the changed objects again, then all the captions are ok. We are going to go ahead with this solution, but please comment if you have any knowledge of this case.
