Suggested Development tools "Lite" Apps with database level integration with GP

Posted on by

We do a lot of development in dex and our users run mostly full users.

Which is great for power users.

But we have a need for small apps that read/write to our tables and have read access to GP distribution tables.

What would other developers recommend for developing these sort of apps.

Also any relevant detailed info/web training courses on the new service oriented architectures would be helpful.

Some of our need is for BtoB web site applications, some for conventional Windows/Mac desktop and some for Android/Mac/Win10 tablet usage.

These small apps are to do inquires and very simple/limited data entry

20 years ago, we got trained for a week on Dexterity with Scott Stephenson and since then we have developed some very complex and reliable applications that address the needs of power users.

Ideally we would want the same thing for .Net where we can take a one week course to develop web applications outside of GP that integrate through SQL.

GP is just to big/complex/expensive for all but power users and most of our users work almost exclusively on our third party apps with read only access to customer and inventory info.

The big gap is the ability to have outside users access  a few web pages to lookup info or enter simple transactions in our third party apps but we also have a lot of users that enter info into a single form all day.

The elimination of ISV users, qty discounts on concurrent users and business essentials versions has made us the highest cost solution in our vertical. (limited and self serve users have not been well received)

We've built a few "apps" that integrate with GP.  They are written in .NET as web applications.  We wrote our own integration scripts but would like to move towards eConnect and/or SOA in GP 2015.

Examples:  Trial and Evaluation Inventory management, Sales Tracings, Commission processing.

Some companies use Scribe to get data back and forth between different applications.  It is a powerful and flexible integration platform.  You mentioned B2B Web site applications - there are other companies like I95 that build Magento integrations.

Have you explored Extender Enterprise from eOne.  It has the ability to create mini-apps of a sort inside of GP.  Not sure about how it works with the limited/full licensing.  You would have to ask eOne.
