Service Sales

When an item is opened as a service item, the accounts that are charged in sales are cash and recievables. I want to record my service sales but i do have a cost for the service i am providing to my customer. How can we charge COGS for service items.

    Hi Ahmed,

Have you considered treating your costs as an inventory item (or several based on cost category) at $1 each? I am presuming that an all-out project accounting system would be overkill - as well as using Multidimensional Analysis or Analytical Accounting. When you spend the money you would carry it as an asset and then you can use it to record COGS on your documents. Any 'asset' you have left are unapplied costs. You would need to watch it to make sure your accounting doesn't get out of control.

    What services are you providing?

Yes that exactly we are doing we opening our service items as inventoy items so that the cost is charged. Some service we purchase from the vendors and the sell it to the customer so we have to record purchases and sales respectively. But then what is the concept of service items in MS GP, i dont want to use project accouting for this. Is there any other solution?

Ahmed, the Service Item in GP tracks current cost but not quantity.  However, posting a Service item transactions does not charge Cost of Goods Sold.  If you want to track cost on those items, they need to be setup as a Sales Item.  Sales Items are the only Item Type that tracks cost and charges Cost of Goods Sold.  The downside is that, as you know, the quantities are tracked and valued.  However, if you never have an on-hand balance of any of those items, that's not an issue.
