GP Print Settings on New Computer Are Not Correct-Wrong Orientation and Checks Are Not Aligned

Posted on by 233
I have reached out with the below to our GP support provider. They have indicated that this is not a GP issue. But, rather an issue with my computer print settings.

I don't know how this can be the case.  There is nothing that I can see in my print settings where I can specify the orientation for GP reports OR to modify the alignment for my payroll checks in GP.

With my previous laptop, I NEVER had to adjust the orientation for any of my reports in GP.   They all printed as they should - portrait or landscape.  This indicates to me that there has got to be a file of some sort that was not loaded when GP was installed on my new computer.

Also, on my previous laptop, when I had to adjust the alignment on payroll checks, where was an option within GP after I selected the option to Print where I could change the horizontal and vertical alignment.  That is not there anymore.   Again, my provider is telling me that this is not a GP issue but within my computer's print settings.

I NEED HELP!  If this is in my computer's print settings, how do I change them.  If this is a GP issue, how do I correct it?

This is the support request that I sent to my provider. I'm attaching a screen shot of how I no longer get a Print Preview. I only run payroll checks once weekly, on Mondays, and did not capture a screenshot of that print screen. But, it is virtually the same - not option for adjusting alignment.

I have the same printer that I always have.  The only thing that changed is that I got a new computer.   Our service provider took care of loading GP on the new computer for me.

THANK YOU in advance to anyone that can help me get this corrected!

My print settings in GP are not correct since I got my new computer and I do not know how to permanently correct/change them.

1.      Trial Balances in each module default to Portrait, instead of Landscape.

2.      There is also no Print Preview available.

3.      Checks are not aligned.   There used to be a tab when printing check to change the horizontal and vertical alignment (e.g., +.25 if printing too high,, as they are).  But, I no longer have that option. When I select print, I just got the option to select a printer.  When I do, the checks automatically print.

    Hey Patti-

You may want to check out the printer drivers first. I see it's an HP printer and the HP Universal printer driver is total garbage. See if there is a print driver specifically for your model from HP.

The other wildcard here is Windows 11 (I am sure your previous machine was Windows 10). The print dialogs were changed (for the sake of change, not for any kind of improvement). The article that Brandon linked to -- about getting the old print window back -- is worth a try, too.

    Hello Patti,

Let’s see if we can get you pointed in the correct direction.
    1. If your var says it is not GP and is your machine, this to me would point to your Printer Driver installed or operating system on the machine.
      1. The printer driver does drive how the printing is done from GP. You will need to review what printer driver you have and determine if there are other printer drives you can try for your printer.

    1. The print preview issues is not GP or your machine specific. This was a change to the windows operating system.

    1. For the Adjusting of the Horizontal and Vertical line.
      1. For this, you need to print to the screen. Then from the screen, you click the Print button.
      2. In the Print Dialog, make sure a printer is selected.
      3. Click the More settings.
      4. Once a printer is selected, you should see the table to adjust the Horizontal and Vertical.
        1. I don’t have a printer currently, but it should be right here.
    1. How do you change Printer Settings.
      1. Click the windows button and type Printer.
        1. Select Printers and Scanners.
      2. Select the Printer.
      3. Select Printer Properties and/or Printer Preferences.
      4. Make the changes in these window.
    2. If not a GP issue, how do you correct.
      1. You can try different drivers.
      2. Can try reverting the old print dialog window back.
    I hope this helps!
