Preparing For Demo: Item Variants or Relationships - Selling portions of bulk item by specific UoM's

I am preparing a demo for a prospect who is very interested in implementing.

They posed a unique scenario that I am uncertain can be accomplished currently (pre Spring 2018 release).

The have an item that represents a bulk product that they receive from their supplies in a carton - they sell said product by the carton as well using the bulk/carton item number.

They also break these cartons down and sell in specific weights with different items numbers: XYYYYY where X is the weight and YYYYY is the "bulk" item number.

This is a hard requirement for them as their existing customer base submits their orders using these unique weight modified item numbers.

This could be accomplished with assembly orders when available but because of the sheer volume of these assembly orders they would need it's like just an administrative burden with little value to their reporting because ultimately they only care how much "bulk" they have.

In an idea world I guess I'm looking for some kind of "variant" item number that is a child of the bulk item with a specific UoM from the parent.

Anyone know if this is possible?

Appreciate your help as always!

    Hi Jonas,

We do not have Variants in D365 for Financials yet. From my first reading of your response, here are two ideas that come to mind:

Choice 1: Use the Cross Reference functionality. This allows you to keep one Item, and have a unique identifier for an Item No + UOM combination. You can even make it Customer specific. I can't remember off the top of my head if the Cross Reference No. will print by default on Sales Quote/Order Conf/Shipment/Posted Invoice.

Choice 2: Use the Item Journal to post a Negative Adjustment of the product being received with a certain Item No. and UOM, and subsequently post a Positive Adjustment for the new Item No (the original item with a different UOM and identifier). Be sure to note the Posting Date and costs being used on the Negative Adjustment and use the same for the Positive Adjustment entry / entries.

Neither is a perfect solution, but it should at least give you a workaround solution that can be implemented in the short term.

Good luck on your demo! If my response has answered your question, please verify by clicking Yes next to "Did this answer your question?"

    Hi Jonas,

I think what you are describing can be solved by using the Item Cross Reference.  I ran through a quick senario and took some screen shots let me know if this helps!

Step 1: First thing I did was I set up a new Item for my Bulk item with the Unit of Measure as Carton.  Then I went into the Item Cross Reference page, located under the Navigate tab on the Item Card.

Step 2: To create my item cross references I added my cross reference numbers 1001-X and 1001-Y and their unit of measure 1/2Carton and 1/4Carton.

When setting up your new Unit of Measures you can tell D365F how they relate to your base Unit of Measure.  For our case there will be 2 1/2 cartons per carton and 4 1/4Carton per Carton.

Step 3: Finally on a sales order you will enter in the bulk item number, and the item cross reference number in the lines section of the Sales Order.  If you do not see the cross-ref field on you lines section just right click and choose columns and it should be in there.

    I hope this helps!
