Upgrading CRM 2013 on-Prem to 365 on-Prem

Posted on by 815

To achieve my migration from 2013 to 365 I’m planning on building three servers 2015, 2016 & 365. Is this over kill or should I just build a single 2015 server and upgrade it to 2016 then to 365 once I have restored my 2013 production environment onto it?

The reason for having three server is that I don’t have to restore the servers if I need to do this several times.

Also, to save time I’m just going to install CRM & SQL on the same server and not use dedicated service user accounts for the 2015 & 2016 installs but wait until I reach 365 so it matches production at that stage.

Your feedback and comments would be great.

    RE: Upgrading CRM 2013 on-Prem to 365 on-Prem

    Hello,

I have never migrated from 2013 to D365 but I migrated 2013 to 2016 and this is how it worked fine for me:

    1. I prepared temp 2015 like a transition zone and 2016 as a new production environment.

    2. I took a backup of 2013, imported to 2015 with upgrade.

    3. Took a ne backup of 2015 and imported to 2016 with upgrade.

    4. I and my collegues tested 2016, found couple of issues (related to customizations mostly) and fixed it.

    5. I switched off 2013 and customer started to use 2016 as a production environment.

So I believe that way 2013->2015->2016->D365 is the cleanest way to migrate.
