Car Dealership inventory

Hi,
I am looking to but our vehicles for resale into BC and all costs be tracked to an item using its Stock #.
I would enter all the costs by entering the invoices, but how do I get these costs to be linked to the item?

Do I need to think about it as manufacturing where the purchase is the raw material, the reconditioning and adding accessories as processing?
Or is there a simpler way?

The end result would be to look up an item and see its full cost.

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks,
Cedric

To track the full cost of each vehicle using its Stock # in Business Central, the most straightforward and commonly used approach is to treat the vehicle as a standard inventory item and use Item Charges to allocate additional costs such as reconditioning, accessories, and shipping. These charges can be applied to the original purchase receipt and will update the item’s unit cost, making it easy to view the total cost directly on the item card. You typically don't need to use manufacturing or assembly unless the vehicle is being significantly altered. This method keeps things simple and gives you accurate costing for each unit.

    Hello,

For tracking all costs of vehicles for resale in Business Central, the best approach is to treat each vehicle as a unique item with serial tracking and use the Specific costing method. You can purchase the vehicle normally (as the base item), then post additional costs like reconditioning, transport, or accessories using Item Charges or Revaluation Journals to allocate those costs directly to the item's cost. With serial tracking and Specific costing, BC tracks each vehicle individually by its Stock #, and all linked costs stay tied to that serial number. This gives you complete visibility into the full landed cost of each vehicle and ensures accurate profitability analysis when sold. You don’t need to treat it like manufacturing unless the process involves structured BOMs or routings. This approach keeps things simple and precise for resale businesses.

Hope this answer will help you!

To track the full cost of vehicles in Business Central using their Stock #, the simplest and most effective method is to treat each vehicle as an inventory item and use Item Charges to allocate additional costs like reconditioning, accessories, and transport. These charges are linked to the original purchase and update the item’s unit cost, allowing you to view the complete cost directly from the item card. This avoids the complexity of manufacturing or assembly orders unless the vehicle undergoes significant transformation. This approach is widely used and provides clear, accurate cost tracking without overcomplicating the process.

To add other fees to a vehicle purchase when on the same invoice from the vendor I used an Item line for the purchase and Item Charges for the additional fees.
But now I have a service invoice from a different vendor that needs the cost added to that inventory item, which will increase the items cost but I also only want the Item Quantity to be one as it is just one Vehicle for Resale.

Any one know how I could do that?
    Thanks again,
    Cedric
