Business portal upgrade

Posted on by

To all,

when upgrading from gp 10, i am required to upgrade business portal.

I upgraded my gp to 2013 r2 but after configuring sharepoint 2013 sp1 foundation and installing web service, i installed portal and when I pointed it to the dynamics database that i upgraded to gp 2013 r2. it gave an incompatibility message.

what should i do? Do i need to change the upgrade tactic an if so Do I need to repeat the upgrade on gp again from GP 10.

Kindly advise.

RomRyan

Thank you for the precision... Were you able to do a fresh proper install of BP 6.1 on a new SharePoint Foundation server ? since you are coming from an old (I presume WSS 3.0) setup, there are some steps to consider before you get to the latest BP 6.1. The upgrade document covers only situations were you come from BP 5.0 and up, but the underlying SharePoint upgrade process should remain the same. Please refer to Page 6 of the BP 6.1 upgrade documentation...

Have you upgraded your GP database already on the back-end test server ? when running the BP 6.1 setup utility, it's going to try to connect to your GP data server and validate the major version of your system, and if not finding the proper ones, it's going to throw an error about incorrect version.

    Beat BUCHER,

I am doing an upgrade test and I will migrate this portal to a new server since its lying on winServer2003+ sql server 2005 which is not with par with the other systems. I am migrating to winserver 2012 r2+ sql server 2012.

I thought bp 6.1 would easily recognize gp 2013 r2 data and agree to install since I wasnt keen on share point databases from the old server as I was ready to add users again at sharepoint level.

    RE: Business portal upgrade

    Hi Romryan,

    two questions :

    - did you move your BP server to a new system ?

    - have you followed the directions from Microsoft about upgrading BP from 4.0 to 6.x ?

You need to be careful about the upgrade process, since the new (and last) version of  BP can either be installed on a 32-bits or 64-bits system, which means that it's a different version (6.0 or 6.1).

Personally we upgraded the last time BP to 5.0 when upgrading GP from 10.0 to 2010, as we needed to add new companies in GP, which requires to re-run the setup on BP to integrate your new companies. If the setup detects that the back-end version of GP doesn't match your BP version, it will throw an error and not let you go further.

When upgrading to GP 2013R2, I tried to setup a new  BP 6.0 server, but was unsuccessful to connect to the new GP server when it came time to switch the production (in test it worked fine though).. As we didn't needed new GP companies, we just pointed told BP 5.0 server to the new GP 2013R2 server. this will work  and you won't experience much troubles.. The only drawback is that this combination is not supported by Microsoft if you try to open a support call.

Did you change the Compatibility Level for the databases when you moved them to the new Server.
