Upgrading to GP 2018 Web Components

When upgrading I have seen in the Web Components Installation and Administration Guide you need to upgrade your Web Components.  We were on GP 2016 and want to upgrade to GP 2018.  I followed the instructions listed but having some issues:

The instructions were as follows:

To upgrade Web Components from a Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015 deployment in
the single machine configuration, complete the following procedure.
1. Open an elevated command prompt as an administrator.
2. Change the directory to the AdProd\WebComponents\Updates folder on the
Microsoft Dynamics GP installation media.
3. Install the msp file in the updates folder using a command like the following:
msiexec /update filename.msp
Replace the filename.msp with the name of the file with an msp extension in the
updates folder.

The problem I have on the installation media in the "WebComponents" directory there is no Updates folder.  Also in this folder there are no .msp files.  These instructions are older but I assume not much has changed for upgrading.  Am I missing something on the install media or is there something else I need to download?

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Tom

    HI Tom,

Yes agree about the documentation.. though it's titled for GP 2018, it clearly wasn't updated in all the content.

I had struggled for serveral days to get my GP 2018 Web Client working again.. and it turned out to be the SQL identity that wasn't 100% equal between the GP Utilities and Web Component setup.. watch out for typos or CapitaLization of the letters :-)

I have not heard from any one from Microsoft on this either.  It looks like I am going to take your advice from your first reply and do a re install.  Thank you for your help.  Looks like the documentation is out of date and needs updated.

    Hi Tom,

This is the Web Component Installation & Admin guide for 2018.. there is a section (Chap 5) about upgrade.. Basically it says the same thing you mentioned already, and I can confirm that neither the GP2018 DVD has this update sub-folder in the WebComponent folder... so clearly someone in the documentation review didn't fact-checked the content of the media..

Maybe someone from Microsoft could chime in and explain what the real steps should be ? (aside of doing a full brand new install).

PS: what's even more frightening is this note on page 84 of the guide:

If you watch closely, you should see a new Silverlight application is downloaded
for the Microsoft Dynamics GP web client.

    Hi Tom,

I went the same route as you.. .but my experience was the following :

    - upgrading the Web client from a previous version usually doesn't work.. The best is to remove the old one, delete the associated SQL database GPCONFIGURATION and start from scratch.

    - I found out that the Web client is very sensitive and even when something goes wrong after installing any 3rd-party ISV product, running a repair sometimes work, but sometimes not.. So you return to point 1 and re-install from scratch.

    - the SSL certificates are mandatory, even when using a single-server instance and only access the web client from intern, but again, when something doesn't work, you start again from scratch. Sometimes a repair fixes the problem, but not always.

The documentation is completely outdated and goes back to the first release in GP 2013 and even mentions the SilverLight component, which has been discontinued for release 2015..

The big problem with the GP Web Client is that it's sort of a Hybrid web application.. and you can't use IIS the traditional way to figure out how it's working and eventually try to fix it.

    Another useful topic is here:

    community.dynamics.com/.../upgrading-dynamics-gp-2018-web-client

    It says:

From the Microsoft Dynamics GP installation media, double-click the Setup.exe file to open the Microsoft Dynamics GP installation window.

Click Web Components and then click Install.

Select to upgrade your existing web client installation.

I hope this will suits your case...
