Cannot connect Dynamics 2016 (online) and Sharepoint (online) due to "Unexpected Error"

Posted on by

This is a new environment.  No previous document management has been configured.  I am trying to enable Server-Based Sharepoint Integration between Dynamics Online and Sharepoint Online and when I enter the URL of the Sharepoint Online site I get an "Unexpected Error".  I don't even get to the <Validate Sites> step.

Steps to reproduce:

- Go to Settings> Document Management

- Click > Enable Server-Based SharePoint Integration

- In the <Define Deployment> step, select the "Online" option, click next.

- In the <Prepare Sites> step, enter the URL of the my Sharepoint Online site, click next.

I receive an error with the following message:

Unexpected Error

An error has occurred.

Try this action again. If the problem continues, check the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Community for solutions or contact your organization's Microsoft Dynamics CRM Administrator. Finally, you can contact Microsoft Support.

It never even progresses to the <Validate Sites> step.

I am using CRM Dynamics Online 2016 and Sharepoint Online 2016.  I have tried in both Chrome and IE.  The user I am using can access the Sharepoint Site directly (when I type the sharepoint online directly into a browser tab) and has full control.  The user is an Admin in Dynamics.

I'm a bit stumped and don't know where to go from here.

Any suggestions welcome.

Anshul Bhamore is correct, you have to have Global Admin in order to be able to setup the integration, otherwise, you'll get the weird error message without any details on it.

You have to have global admin rights. I spent one full day with Microsoft Dynamics support to troubleshoot the issue. I was Dynamics and SP service administrator but not global admin. The moment we changed my role to global admin i was able to validate the sites and setup sever enabled authentication

I have exactly the same case. Anyone get the real solution? I cannot request Global Admin role to my clients. Please let me know.

    Thanks.

Samke (and anyone else reading this later)

We ultimately determined that this was somehow due to permissions.

The user we were using to set up the integration was an Admin in Dynamics and had Admin rights to Sharepoint Site Collection.  However, it still wasn't working.

When we used a user with full "Global Admin" rights we were able to set up the integration easily as per the documentation.  We're not sure what permission was missing from our first user, but the set up seems to require Global Admin rights to work.

    Hi Scott,

The issue mentioned by you is quite strange. As we tried to replicate the issue with our trial environment and we didn’t face such issue.

Also you may refer this blog http://www.inogic.com/blog/2014/07/server-based-sharepoint-integration-for-microsoft-dynamics-crm/  to check if you have missed anything.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!
    Sam
