Hello Community,

Is there a way we can directly access & Query Business Central Table's Underlying data without Exporting it to Azure DB or External DB ?

My client using Online BC service not On-premises.

Not really a simple way. You can use some free community-built tools to export data in bulk such as this data editor: Table Data Editor for Business Central

You can also try using web services, but you may need to build custom web services to expose data that isn't part of standard BC web services and then you can use an API.

Others in the community may know of other apps but the online web based BC is more restrictive than on-prem databases for security and continuity purposes.

    Thank you @Teagen Boll

Is there a way where we can Directly Access BC's Underlying Database itself?

Base on Your Answer I'm assuming it's not possible, but checking if there is way.

I don't believe you can access the database directly

Is this for reporting purposes? Try:
     - Jet Reports
     - Power BI

Is it for integration purposes? Try:
     - REST APIs / Custom API pages
     - Web Services (SOAP/OData)

Is it to just see the table-level records for troubleshooting purposes? Try:
     - Configuration Packages

    * There is no direct SQL Server access.

Unfortunately, if you're talking about SaaS, it's not possible to do this directly as of today. You'll always need a middleware, such as APIs or OData. Even for Microsoft's first-party integrations, such as Power Apps and Power Automate, the same applies—they still rely on these standard APIs and OData connectors behind the scenes.

    Thanks

    Hello,

For Business Central Online, direct SQL/Azure SQL access to the underlying database is not available; Microsoft explicitly states that you can only communicate with BC Online data through the application/service layer. If you want to query data without exporting it to another database, the recommended approach is to use the standard Business Central REST APIs (v2.0) for standard entities, or create custom API Pages / API Query objects when you need fields, tables, joins, or datasets that the standard APIs don't expose. OData web services can also expose pages and queries, but Microsoft recommends API pages/queries instead of OData for performance and stability. So for a SQL-like reporting requirement, I would normally create an API Query containing exactly the tables/fields required and query it live from Power BI, Azure Functions, Postman, or another application using OAuth; you cannot connect SQL Management Studio directly to the SaaS database.

    Regards,

Hi, no, not directly. In BC online there's no access to the SQL database at all, Microsoft doesn't open it, not even read-only. So no SSMS, no connection string, nothing like that.

What you get instead are the APIs. The standard API v2.0 covers the common entities, and for anything else a developer makes a custom API page or API query in an extension, a small job usually. Power BI, Excel or any tool that speaks OData can read from those. For heavy reads there's the DataAccessIntent ReadOnly property on API pages and queries, then the request goes to the read replica and doesn't slow down the users.

If it's only for a quick look at the data, two tricks inside the client. Add ?table= with the table number to the URL to see the raw table, and analysis mode on list pages does a lot of what people want SQL for.

One caveat, APIs are not for pulling millions of rows every hour. For that volume you end in export to a lake anyway.

Glad to help - follow up if anything is unclear.

►  If this solved it, marking it verified helps others too.
