Hi,
I have set up an Account record with several child Account records. I can view the visual hierarchical model, but no other users can.
Is there a security role around this? I'm a system admin and the other users have normal sales security roles.

Go to settings>>Security>>Security Role>>Select the role facing issues>>Under customization tab>>Hierarchy rule>>check if your user has got any privilege here?
if yes, is it only read or its read, create & write.
Try giving them read, write & create and see if it works.

Can you send screenshot of security roles assigned to normal users? There are chances that the normal security has only user level read access to account record and hence the are not able to see records created by sys admin.
